Some Spanish expressions you won’t learn from textbooks
– Quedarse frito: fall asleep quickly and deeply. Example: Siento llegar tarde me he quedado frita.
– Estar en la parra: used to describe someone who is daydreaming, thinking of other things. A synonym for this expression is Estar en las nubes. Example: No sé de que está hablando el profesor, estoy en la parra.
– Llevarse como el perro y el gato: when two people get on very badly (they argue, never agree, fight over everything or simply can’t stand being in each other’s company) it is said se llevan como el perro y el gato. Example: “Antonio y Pepe se llevan como el perro y el gato”.
– Hacer el agosto: make a lot of money during a specific, limited period of time. For example, las tiendas de juguetes, en Navidad hacen su agosto, porque es la época del año que más venden.
– No pegar ojo: when someone has not slept all night; to get no sleep at all. Example: Ana está muy cansada porque no ha podido pegar ojo en toda la noche.
– Coser y cantar: something is “coser y cantar” when it is very easy, “a piece of cake”.Example: El examen de hoy ha sido coser y cantar.
