New arrivals are a sure sign that spring is here. Valencia’s Bioparc has just introduced its latest arrival – a baby giraffe - to the world. I say “baby”, but judging by this photo it couldn’t exactly be said to be “small”.

The new giraffe, and the first one born at the Bioparc, arrived in Fallas but has had a difficult first month. Its mother rejected him and so he has been being hand-reared by the Bioparc’s keepers and vets (hence the giant bottle in the picture). However, after learning that the giraffe gestation period is a jaw-dropping 457 days, I also sympathise with his mother!

Route 66 Language School students planning to go to the Bioparc soon will have the chance to vote to choose the giraffe’s name: visitors will be able to vote for their favourite of 4 options chosen by the staff.

Bioparc Valencia is situated in “El Parque de Cabecera”, A 200.000m2 green space at the mouth of the Turia Park.

As the visitor goes deep in the savannah, he comes across herds of antilopes, giraffes and rhinoceros, while the lions dominate the great prairie from the high rocks.

Discover the life that’s developing in the subsoil surrounding the termites, covering the dens of the warthogs and hyenas.

Find adventure in the depths of the Ecuatorian forest in search of gorillas, buffalo and leopards. Follow the elephant track which leads you to the cave excavated by these

Pachyderm.

Be submerged underwater amongst hippos, crocodiles and hundreds of coloured fish.

The visit to Bioparc starts at the entrance, where you’ll find a wide range of restaurants and leisure activites. After going through the turnstyles you’ll find yourself at the information point, main shop, the workshops and left luggage office.

At the centre of the park you can’t miss the amphitheatre, a wide open space where you can observe the behaviour of birds and mammals.

Bioparc is an outstanding zoo that has been created with the concept of zoo-immersion, which seeks to submerge the visitor in the recreation of natural habitats.
