THE ART OF FLAMENCO
May 7th
Flamenco arrived in Spain with the gipsies from India. In the way it added the rhythms of different kinds of music, African, Arabic and others from Asia.
Flamenco was born in Andalucía from that fusion and it manifests itself in three ways: singing, dancing and playing the guitar.
Flamenco is an expression of happiness at weddings and parties, and of regret at funerals. During the saeta they cry for Jesus on the cross in the processions of Semana Santa.
Also, in the folklore like the sevillanas, people dance in the ferias of Andalucía.
Nowadays it is mixed with jazz, rock and opera in adapted versions such as our famous “Carmen”.
The authentic and traditional flamenco is the one performed on the tablaos, where experts enjoy it together with a glass of good wine.
These are the opinions of our students:
Xiao Lei: “I enjoyed these classes a lot because flamenco dancing is very poignant and at the same time it tells you a story. We brought our feelings out onto the stage”
Natascia: “I like flamenco classes. The music is very good, but it’s not easy to coordinate every part of your body with it.”
