Interpreting football

Last week, someone called Route 66: “Hello. I need two interpreters tomorrow afternoon, one for Portuguese and the other for English. If the English interpreter also knows some French, that would be even better, because they’d be interpreting for a Frenchman who’s going to speak in English. The job involves translating colloquial, sport-related language. There will be a group of journalists and the interpreters will have to help them when they’re bombarded with questions.”
“No problem. Carlos will take care of the Portuguese and Jon the English/French.”
“Thanks.”
The next day, at the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum, the interpreters meet the person in charge.
“OK, so who is the Portuguese interpreter?”
“I am,” answered Carlos.
“Well, come with me now and I’ll introduce you to Kaká,” said the woman.
“Kaká the footballer?!”asked an amazed Carlos.
“Yes, didn’t you know?” she replied.
“No,” I interrupted, speaking as the representative of the Route 66 translation department, “but it’s fine. So, who will I be interpreting for?”
“Well, as Márquez is Mexican and speaks Spanish perfectly, you’ll have to help Henry,” she replied.
“Thierry Henry who plays for Barça?!”
“Yes, but, did no-one tell you this? Ah, of course, security precautions… We don’t want the place to fill up with journalists and particularly not with kids…”
“Of course, of course,” agreed the interpreters.
So, there we were with the three football stars, having a kick about, helping them in their press conferences and interviews and, mostly Henry and I, having a laugh. In other words the ideal job.
They were very pleasant: it seems that Route 66’s translators and interpreters are efficient and friendly.
And not to mention the drinks reception when we’d finished…. It was just a shame they couldn’t stay longer to chat with us some more.

Viernes 28 de Mayo: cine en la escuela
Hora: 15.00-17.00 Película: Justino
Sinopsis:
Justino, rematador de toros, después de recibir un caluroso homenaje de despedida recibe la jubilación anticipada de manos del empresario. A partir de entonces, le resulta imposible asumir la nueva situación y el exceso de alcohol hace que sea ingresado en el hospital.
Al salir del centro médico, Justino intenta readaptarse al enrarecido ambiente familiar, donde el hijo y la nuera quieren casarlo con la vecina del tercero, doña Pura. Una noche, Justino acaba con la vida de su hijo y de su nuera con un par de certeras estocadas que demuestran que no ha olvidado su oficio.
Posteriormente, Justino vuelve a matar, pero siempre en estado de inconsciencia. El ex matador y Sansoncito (el encargado de los cojines en la plaza de toros), después de haber pasado por una crisis de amistad, deciden organizar una fiesta para celebrar la jubilación de éste último.

Sinopsis:
In the year 2054 A.D. crime is virtually eliminated from Washington D.C. thanks to an elite law enforcing squad “Precrime”. They use three genetically altered humans (called “Pre-Cogs”) with special powers to see into the future and predict crimes beforehand. John Anderton heads Precrime and believes the system’s flawlessness steadfastly. However one day the Pre-Cogs predict that Anderton will commit a murder himself in the next 36 hours. Worse, Anderton doesn’t even know the victim. He decides to get to the mystery’s core by finding out the ‘minority report’ which means the prediction of the female Pre-Cog Agatha that “might” tell a different story and prove Anderton innocent.

Vamos a pasar la mañana en Sagunto. Ahí veremos el castillo, el teatro romano y el casco antiguo del pueblo.
Hora: Nos vemos a las 9.45h en la escuela. Apúntate en la oficina si estás interesado (mínimo 6 personas).

Interpretando Fútbol

Alguien llamó la semana pasada a Route 66:
- Hola, necesito dos intérpretes para mañana por la tarde, uno de portugués y otro de inglés. Si el de inglés tiene conocimientos de francés, mejor, porque se trata de un francés que va a hablar en inglés. Se trata de lenguaje coloquial, relacionado con el deporte. Habrá un grupo de periodistas y habría que ayudarlos cuando hagan preguntas a los ponentes.
- No hay problema. Carlos y Jon se encargarán del portugués, el primero, y del inglés/francés, el segundo.
- Gracias.
Al día siguiente, en el museo Príncipe Felipe, los intérpretes se encuentran con la persona responsable.
- Bien, ¿quién es el de portugués?
- Yo -contestó Carlos.
- Pues tú ven conmigo y ahora te presento a Kaká -le dijo la mujer.
- ¿A Kaká el futbolista? -preguntó asombrado Carlos.
- Sí, ¿no lo sabías? -siguió ella.
- Pues no -interrumpí yo, como representante del departamento de traducción de Route 66-, pero no pasa nada. Entonces ¿a quién interpreto yo?
- Pues teniendo en cuenta que Márquez es mexicano y habla español perfectamente, tú habrás de ayudar a Henry -me contestó.
- ¿A Thierry Henry, el jugador de Barça?
- Sí, pero ¿es que nadie os lo había dicho? Ah, claro, motivos de seguridad… Es que no queremos que esto se llene de periodistas ni, especialmente, de niños…
- Claro, claro -asentimos los intérpretes.
Total, que estuvimos junto con las tres estrellas del fútbol dando unos toques al balón, ayudándolos en sus ruedas de prensa, colaborando en las entrevistas y, sobre todo yo con Henry, riéndonos. Todo un lujo laboral, vamos.
Ellos se mostraron muy amables: parece que los traductores y los intérpretes de Route 66 son eficaces y simpáticos.
Y qué decir del cóctel que sirvieron al acabar todo… Una pena que no se quedaran a charlar más con nosotros.

Sinopsis:
Finales de los 60. Buscapé tiene 11 años y es sólo un niño más en “Cidade de Deus”, un suburbio de Río de Janeiro. Tímido y delicado, observa a los niños duros de su barrio, sus robos, sus enfrentamientos diarios con la policía. Ya sabe lo que quiere ser si consigue sobrevivir: fotógrafo.

Sinopsis:
In Nazi Germany during World War II, as the tide turned in favor of The Allies, a cadre of senior German officers and politicians desperately plot to topple the Nazi regime before the nation is crushed in a near-inevitable defeat. To this end, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, an Army officer convinced he must save Germany from Hitler, is recruited to mastermind a real plan. To do so, he arranges for the internal emergency measure, Operation: Valkyrie, to be changed to enable his fellows to seize control of Berlin after the assassination of the Fuhrer. However, even as the plan is put into action, a combination of bad luck and human failings conspire on their own to create a tragedy that would prolong the greater one gripping Europe.
