Like every year, in the second two weeks of July the Feria de Julio will take place in Valencia counting with a wide range of different events like cultural acts, concerts and the famous Valencian fireworks.

The Feria de Julio was created in the 19th century by the merchants of the city as a means of preventing the Valencian bourgeoisie and middle class from leaving the city during the summer months. As a common practice they went to places like the Cantabrian beaches because of their fresher climate. The Valencian bourgeoisie met in pabellones and stands to celebrate the fair.

Amongst all the celebrations there are two which are of special interest: the feria taurina (bull fair) and the Batalla de Flores (Flower Fight). In the Batalla de Flores, which takes place the last weekend of July, the girls of the flower carriages “fight” against the audience with millions of carnations leaving an impressive colourful flower carpet on the streets. Apart from that the Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Música (International Band Contest) is held at the Palau de la Música and the Plaza de Toros. The Festival de Viveros offers a broad spectrum of artistic performances, from classic ballet to rock bands, theatre, folklore, gypsy dance, zarzuela… Another thing you’d better not miss are the fireworks made by the best pirotechnists.
