VALENCIA IN THE SUMMER

The month of July comes to an end and with it the Feria de Julio – within which we visited the jazz festival (see article on the next page). In the decade of 1870 the emerging valencian bourgeoisie creates the Feria de Julio with the pretext to follow the precedent “corregudes de Sant Jaume”. With the heat coming the bourgeoisie and middle class abandoned the capital of the river Turia to go to cooler places. The merchants, who wanted to keep the valencians in the city, agreed with the city council on the creation of the annual Feria de Julio in 1970. With the years, the programme of the festival became more and more important and as well parades as expositions, etc. were included.

BEACHES

I’m a big fan of the beaches. I just love hanging out there, soaking up the sun, going for a swim, a snorkel or reading a good book. The atmosphere really calms me down and I can relax perfectly listening to the not-so-distant sound of the waves breaking. After a four week beach experience at Playa Tamarindo, Playa Conchal and Playa Langosta etc. in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, I feel qualified to pass judgement on the differences between the beaches in Valencia and in Costa Rica.

JAZZ

Like every year the X. Jazz Festival in the gardens of the Palau de la Música closed with a second night of free concerts. On the night of the 20th of July the two bands Biréli Langrène Gipsy Proyect and En Clave Latin Jazz were on stage.

The first group from France presented its peculiar style ´Tsigane´ in a spectacle called ´Gipsy Proyect´ with Franck Wolf on the saxophone, Hono Winterstein on guitar and Diego Imbert on contrabass. Biréli Langrène the bands lead-guitarist could not play as he was ill, a fact that was badly taken by the spectators. Nevertheless, at the end of the concert the trio were seen off with rapturous applause, so that you have to ask yourself what you had actually missed.

After the French band, the valencian group ´En Clave Latin Jazz´ closed the X. Jazz Festival offering a jam session in the gardens of the Palau de la Música. For its part, the group offered a selection of latin themes and an all-time jazz repertoire, synthesised and adjusted for piano, drums and electric bass. The band consists of Felip Santaqndreu on drums, Paul Ortolá on piano, Oscar Cortes on bass and Carlos Llidó on percussion.
Without a doubt, a worthwhile show!
